As from the 1st of October 2015 any property in England with a new tenancy agreement will be required by law to have smoke alarms installed on all floors and a Carbon Monoxide alarm fitted in a room that contains a solid fuel heating system i.e wood or coal burning fireplaces and stoves.
Existing alarms must be tested before new tenancy commences and alarms should conform to the relevant British standards
BS 5839-6:2013 and BS 50292:2013
Although the new law currently does not extend towards Gas burning appliances it is good practice to have a Carbon Monoxide alarm fitted especially if you still have an old "open-flued" type boiler or gas fire that's in direct communication with the room.
A good time to check if your property complies is during it's annual gas safety inspection, As part of the service you can request that your Gas Safe engineer test the alarms and ensure that any CO alarm is still in date, and if it's expired to be replaced.
